The Hmong Association of Washington closes Seattle Center's year of free cultural festivals with its New Year, which marks the end of the harvest and gives thanks to ancestors. It's the biggest celebration on the Hmong calendar, and the Armory fills with families in intricately embroidered clothing and silver jewelry, traditional dance and music, and food. Watch for pov pob, the ball toss played between pairs that doubles as a courtship ritual. Few events in Seattle celebrate this highland Asian culture so fully on its own terms.
