Portland still sounds like itself on the dial: volunteer DJs who answer to no playlist, a jazz station that has been part of the city’s music scene since 1984, and community studios where neighbors take the mic to talk about city hall. Add the podcasts and channels made here, and you can spend a whole day with local voices in your ears.

Everything below covers Portland, the rest of Oregon or the wider Northwest, and most of it is made right here in the metro or across the river in Clark County. We leaned toward volunteer-run and independent outlets alongside the big public broadcasters. We kept only what’s active: each station was streaming in early November, each podcast has released a new episode in the past few months, and each YouTube channel has posted recently. Show times, hosts and release schedules appear only where the station or show publishes them.

On the radio

OPB

91.5 FM

Oregon Public Broadcasting runs one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest newsrooms, an independent nonprofit that reports from southern Washington to southern Oregon and has served the area for more than a century. Keep it on for the state’s news as it happens, and for the long conversations that follow.

Oregon and Southwest Washington news, election nights, the drive to work
Don’t miss
Think Out Loud, Dave Miller’s daily conversation on news, politics, culture and the arts

KBOO

90.7 FM

Portland’s longtime community station is non-commercial, listener-sponsored and made by hundreds of volunteers, with a mission that puts oppressed and underserved communities at the center. The schedule swings from public affairs to music shows you won’t find on any other dial, and the signal also reaches Hood River on 91.9 FM and Corvallis on 104.3 FM.

Good for
grassroots news, activist voices, crate-digging music shows
Don’t miss
Old Mole Variety Hour, Mondays 9–10am, political commentary from the left plus reviews of film, books, music and theater

KMHD

89.1 FM

The city’s jazz station plays around the clock under the motto “Jazz Without Boundaries,” covering the history of recorded jazz and the styles that branched off from it. It’s licensed to Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham and operated by OPB, and its website keeps tabs on jazz gigs around town.

89.1 FM and online
Good for
dinner at home, rainy Sunday afternoons, finding a show to see

All Classical Radio

89.9 FM

An independent, community-funded station that has kept classical music on Portland radio since 1983, with local hosts on the air and programs devoted to Oregon performers. Sister signals carry it to the coast, the Gorge and McMinnville.

XRAY.fm

107.1 / 91.1 FM

XRAY set out in 2014 to put a microphone to the most distinctive of Portland, and the schedule still reflects that: civic talk on weekday mornings, music in the afternoons and on weekends, and nearly all of it produced by Portland volunteers. The nonprofit also broadcasts to Nehalem on 91.7 FM.

Listen
107.1 and 91.1 FM and online
Good for
local politics, Portland DJs, new bands
Don’t miss

Freeform Portland

90.3 FM and 98.3 FM

Here the DJ has total control, whatever the genre and whatever the commercial pull. More than 125 volunteers have kept this nonprofit on the air since 2016, and they bring the station out to bars around town for regular Freeform nights.

Listen
90.3 FM, 98.3 FM and online
Good for
genre-hopping, record collectors, late-night listening

Portland Radio Project

99.1 FM

PRP works a local artist into the rotation every 15 minutes, runs commercial-free and has its music chosen by people rather than algorithms. The listener-supported nonprofit also records Drop-In Sessions with Portland musicians and hosts a cooperative of community podcasts.

Listen
99.1 FM and online
Good for
discovering Portland bands, workday background music

KPSU

Online

Portland State’s student-run station has been at it since 1994 and now streams entirely online. Any PSU student can host a show, and alumni and community members can sign on for a per-term fee, which keeps the lineup young, eclectic and a little unpredictable.

Listen
online
Good for
college-radio energy, new music, DJ sets that wander

KXRW

99.9 FM

Vancouver’s volunteer-based, low-power community station has been on the air since 2017 with an emphasis on local voices: interviews with elected officials and nonprofit leaders, arts coverage and Northwest bands. Tune in when you want Clark County’s own news and culture rather than Portland’s.

Southwest Washington news, arts and community events
Don’t miss
I’m Into This Place, Wednesdays 4–4:30pm, Adriana Baer’s show on arts, culture and heritage in Clark County
