The neighborhoods around them, Hosford-Abernethy and Richmond, are mostly residential blocks of older houses, and plenty of people here walk or bike to dinner. It suits anyone who likes a long meal followed by a slow stroll, and in summer you can join the volunteers who keep more than 3,000 rose bushes blooming in Ladd’s Addition.

Where to eat and drink
Lauretta Jean’s
Pie is the point here, sold by the slice every day except Tuesday and as whole pies to order, with biscuits, scones and sticky buns alongside. Thanksgiving pies go by pre-order, and the bakery asks you to order early.
Little T Baker
Tim Healea opened this bakery at SE 26th and Division in 2008 and passed it to his longtime head baker, Dillon DeBauche, in 2023. The breads are made with grain from local mills, and the doors close at 2 p.m., so go early for loaves, pastries and sandwiches.
Scottie’s Pizza Parlor
Scottie’s splits the difference between New York and Neapolitan pizza and sells it by the slice, as personal or extra-large pies, or as a 16-inch square grandma pie. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday.
Ava Gene’s
The kitchen calls its Roman-inspired menu “aggressively seasonal,” built on Northwest farms and ranches, with house-made pasta, regional Italian wine and a selection of amari and grappa. Dine-in checks carry a 20% service charge in place of tips.
Magna Kusina
Red, blue and yellow walls borrowed from the Philippine flag set the tone for Filipino cooking like Mom’s Crab Fat Noodles with Dungeness crab and dinuguan served with a breaded pork chop and puto. It’s casual, but book a table: dinner runs Wednesday through Saturday, with lunch on Saturdays.
Broder Café
Broder has served Nordic brunch in Portland since 2007, and its café on Clinton is open seven days a week. Pair it with a walk to Ladd’s Addition, about ten minutes west.
Shops worth a wander
Books with Pictures
“Comics for Everyone” is the motto at this Division Street comic shop, which runs creator meetups, a Books with Pals series and its own convention, BWPcon. Note that it doesn’t buy used or vintage comics.
Langlitz Leathers
Ross Langlitz started making custom leather goods in 1947, and the shop still builds each leather jacket, vest and pair of pants by hand in Portland to the customer’s measurements. Book an appointment to be measured; it’s closed on weekends.
People’s Food Co-op
This member-owned grocery on SE 21st Avenue, south of Clinton, hosts what it calls Portland’s longest-running year-round farmers market on Wednesday afternoons, with matching dollars for EBT shoppers. Member-owners can also volunteer in the store through its Hands-On-Owners program for a shopping discount.
Things to do
Clinton Street Theater
The calendar runs from silent films on 16mm to cult oddities and documentaries, and the theater says Rocky Horror has played here every single week, sometimes with the Clinton Street Cabaret performing alongside the film. The theater bills itself as Portland’s venue for all things weird and wonderful.
Ladd Circle Park & Rose Gardens
William S. Ladd laid out this neighborhood in 1891 on diagonal streets around a central circle, now planted with camellias. Four diamond-shaped rose gardens nearby hold more than 3,000 bushes of about 60 varieties, many of them popular in the early 1900s.
Oregon Rail Heritage Center
One MAX stop west of Clinton/SE 12th Ave, the center keeps two working steam locomotives, Southern Pacific 4449 (built 1941) and Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 (built 1938), next to a working turntable. It’s open Thursday through Sunday afternoons, and the Holiday Express steam train leaves from here in late November and December.
Community
Hosford-Abernethy Neighborhood District Association
HAND’s board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the St. Philip Neri campus near SE 16th and Division, with a Zoom option, and every meeting is open to the public. Neighbors can join the listserv or lend a hand on the communications and events committees.
Richmond Neighborhood Association
Richmond meets on the second Monday of most months at Central Christian Church on SE 39th, or on Zoom if you preregister. Join the listserv, request an agenda slot or ask about open committee and liaison roles.
Friends of Ladd’s Addition Gardens
Portland Parks keeps only a small crew on the Ladd’s Addition roses, so FLAG volunteers deadhead on summer Saturday mornings, adopt individual beds and help plant street trees through the group’s Save Our Elms work.
