For more than 55 years, Meals on Wheels People has served older adults in Multnomah and Washington counties and Clark County, Washington, and it now prepares about 28,000 meals a week. Delivery drivers pick up between 10 a.m. and noon, Monday through Thursday, at one of 22 locations, then spend about an hour and a half dropping off a week’s worth of meals with a quick wellness check.
Drivers must be 18 with their own insured car; dining centers take helpers from age 14 with a chaperone for two- to four-hour lunch shifts. From home, Friendly Chats volunteers phone an older adult each week. Everyone starts with an orientation, held on Zoom every Tuesday at 10 a.m.
