Kent Monkman: Death of Adonis at Tacoma Art Museum

27 June 2026

Cree artist Kent Monkman borrows the grand scale and theatrical staging of 19th-century history painting and turns it on the myths of the American West, exposing what those romantic landscapes left out about colonial expansion and environmental damage. At TAM, his Death of Adonis hangs in conversation with a companion installation of two western landscapes by Grafton Tyler Brown, a 19th-century African American painter, with a close look at Brown's life. Both close Jan. 3. Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. are free.
