SUMMARY:Seattle Forest Week Volunteer Plantings
DESCRIPTION:Every November\, the Green Seattle Partnership kicks off planting season with a week of volunteer work parties in parks and natural areas across the city. No experience is needed and the events are family-friendly and open to all ages. EarthCorps hosts two of them: Saturday\, Nov. 7\, pulling ivy and blackberry from the urban forest at Mt. Baker Park\, and Saturday\, Nov. 14\, restoring salmon-friendly shoreline along Lake Washington Boulevard South with views toward Seward Park. Both run 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wear boots and layers you don't mind getting muddy.

SUMMARY:Forest Park Conservancy Rake-A-Thon
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, leaves and storm debris clog the drainage on Forest Park's trails\, and the Conservancy calls in volunteers to clear them before winter rain turns paths to mud. The Rake-A-Thon sends crews out from several trailheads on the same Saturday morning. It's real work: up to 3 miles of hiking and two and a half hours of raking\, so wear long pants\, long socks and boots with good traction. Register in advance to get your site assignment.

SUMMARY:Juel Park Restoration Work Party
DESCRIPTION:EarthCorps and the Green Redmond Partnership spend a Saturday morning planting trees and shrubs and spreading mulch at Juel Park\, 38 acres in the Sammamish Valley. The valley's fertile bottomland was a hunting\, fishing and gathering ground for Native communities for thousands of years before farming and logging\, and the restoration work helps bring native forest back. No experience is needed\, and youth and school groups are welcome if leaders contact EarthCorps ahead of time. Three hours outside makes a good counterweight to the Thanksgiving rush.

SUMMARY:Seattle Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Birds Connect Seattle\, the former Seattle Audubon\, has run the city's piece of North America's longest-running community science survey for more than 95 years. About 300 volunteers split into teams across 14 sections of a 15-mile circle centered downtown and count every wild bird they find\, from waterfowl on the lake to waxwings by the Space Needle. You don't need to be an expert: field teams mix beginners with experienced birders\, and at-home counters can tally their feeder for an hour. Registration is open now\, and the data goes to National Audubon.
