DESCRIPTION:Pioneer Square's First Thursday has been the city's monthly gallery night for decades. Galleries\, studios and a handful of other venues in the old brick blocks open their doors in the evening for new shows and openings\, and the whole thing is free and self-guided. Pick up a free parking voucher at any participating gallery for the Frye Garage on 3rd Avenue S or 450 Alaskan\, good from 5 to 10 p.m. Check each venue's hours before you go\, then wander; some of the best spaces are up a flight of stairs.

That's three hours to see Northwest and Western art in the Haub Family Collection\, the Kent Monkman and Grafton Tyler Brown pairing before it closes Jan. 3\, and the new Internet Speed show from Nov. 21. The museum sits on Pacific Avenue across from Union Station and a short walk from the Link stop\, so it's easy to fold into dinner downtown. Regular admission is $18 for adults the rest of the week.

DESCRIPTION:Since 1986\, Pearl District galleries have kept their doors open late on the first Thursday of the month for openings\, receptions and a chance to meet the artists. The walk clusters in the blocks around NW 9th Avenue between Burnside and Glisan\, and it's a low-key way to see what Portland artists are making this winter. The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education on NW Davis waives admission for the evening. Winter walks are quieter\, which means better conversations.

DESCRIPTION:Lan Su's chrysanthemum festival opens with four evenings in Old Town's walled garden\, lit by lanterns and lined with roughly 81 varieties of mums\, including cascading waterfall displays from the horticulture team. Eighteen local floral artists and featured designer Toni Tibbits interpret this year's theme\, Golden Blooms Upon Autumn Waters\, and you can vote for your favorite. Guzheng music\, dance from YZ Dance Academy and a floral jewelry-making table round out the night. The daytime floral showcase continues through November 15.
